Jesus and his mom were invited to a wedding and Jesus brought his disciples with him. The bride and groom had a head waiter (equivalent to a wedding planner) who was in charge of the wine and food, and Jesus’ mom was helping out as well. Unfortunately, they did not plan correctly and didn’t have enough wine, which was extremely embarrassing. Mary, knowing full well who her son was, went to Jesus and said “They have no wine!” Jesus said “Yes, but my hour has not come yet [to start doing miracles].”

This was an appeal for grace when they had already screwed up in planning to have enough wine. Jesus didn’t say “No, you being embarrassed isn’t a big deal to me.” He could have said “You’re worried about being embarrassed that you didn’t plan correctly? You’re asking me to help you save face? That’s prideful and selfish.”

But he didn’t.

Jesus told all the waiters to fill up six water jars to the brim (the fact they were full to the brim prove he didn’t just add something, but that he actually changed the molecular complex of it). Each water jar was 20-30 gallons.

Jesus turned the water into wine, and not just enough to finish out the wedding. Jesus created 120-180 gallons of wine. This was WAY more than what was necessary to finish the wedding. And it wasn’t even average-tasting wine. The wedding planner was shocked at how good it was.

He not only saved the bride and groom from embarrassment, but gave them enough to have left overs as a wedding present. EVEN when it wasn’t even his hour to start doing miracles yet.

The God of the universe answered a simple request and provided grace to someone in a moment of need when, for any reason whatsoever, they didn’t deserve it in the first place.

That, my friends, is a true lesson of God’s mind-blowing mercy.
